Giants WR Hakeem Nicks Breaks His Foot In OTA’s

Hakeem Nicks 2012 Season is now in doubt.

The New York Giants Super Bowl title defense got off to a bad start today as wide receiver Hakeem Nicks broke the fifth metatarsal of his right foot according to a report by Michael Eisen of

This is bad news for the Giants, who already had to deal with loss of Mario Manningham, the star receiver of the Super Bowl, who signed a free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers this offseason; now they have handle the possibility of opening the season without their no.1 wide receiver.

The Giants are moving quickly to get the issue taken care of According to the report by Eisen the surgery will be performed right away:

Nicks will undergo surgery tomorrow to have a screw inserted into the broken bone. The procedure will be performed by noted foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, N.C. The expected recovery time for Nicks is approximately 12 weeks. The Giants report to training camp at the University at Albany on July 26.

The expected timeframe for Nicks to heal does not necessarily mean that he will miss much time this season but there will be significant doubts about whether he can be 100 percent healthy by the start of the season. Plus it is never a positive thing to have a key player coming off an injury. It is one thing to have full offseason to rehab and recover, Nicks will have only a few months.

The injury to Nicks will put even more pressure on some of the young receivers on the Giants roster such as rookie Reuben Randle, a second round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft out of LSU and 2011 third-round pick Jerrel Jernigan, a second-year man from Troy State. Veterans Ramses Barden and Domenik Hixon will also be asked to step up in Nicks absence if he is forced to miss any time in the regular season.
