Giants Rookie Rueben Randle is expected to contribute right away.
The New York Giants were thrilled when wide receiver Rueben Randle out of LSU was still available for them at the end of the second round in this years draft. In fact, the team debated taking him in the first round before they decided to go with running back David Wilson. So, needless to say, General Manager Jerry Reese was thrilled to get Randle with the 63rd pick of the draft. Giants Director of College Scouting Marc Ross further elaborated on the team’s position on the Randle pick:
“I really didn’t think there was a chance we were going to get him,” Ross said. “He was one of those where, at the end of the night, you said, ‘He’s going to be one of the first few guys taken at the top of the [second] round.’ It’s very surprising that he was still there.’’
So far, Randle been a pleasant surprise throughout the team’s offseason workouts. Yesterday, Head Coach Tom Coughlin offered some very promising analysis on what he has seen from Randle this offseason. When asked why it can be difficult for rookie wide receivers to produce, Coughlin stated the following:
Well, I don’t know that it is anything other than who it is and exactly what circumstance he finds himself in. Randle has demonstrated, not only does he have a pretty good understanding of what we are trying to do, but he has put himself in position where he has made plays. So just keep getting better. Give us more options; that is what we want.
Look for Randle to compete with Domenik Hixon and Jerrel Jernigan for the no.3 wide receiver position during training camp. If Hakeem Nicks can come back, Randle would compliment him nicely on the outside. This would allow the team to play Victor Cruz in the slot, creating matchup nightmares for any defense. Furthermore, with Nicks out for a significant portion of training camp, look for Randle to see increased reps throughout training camp.
Jayron Hosley is making an impact so far with the G-Men.
However, Randle was not the only player to impress during practice yesterday. Several reports indicate that third-round pick Jayron Hosley out of Virginia Tech looked fantastic as the nickel corner back covering Victor Cruz. If Hosley can keep it up, he could become a surprise contender for the nickel cornerback position, which is expected to go to last year’s first round pick Prince Amukamara.
At least up to this point in the offseason, the New York Giants rookie class seems to be exceeding all expectations. David Wilson, Rueben Randle, and Jayron Hosley have all looked good at times during OTA’s and mini-camp. Furthermore, General Manager Jerry Reese called fourth-round pick Adrien Robinson “the JPP” of tight ends. It will be interesting to see how these players develop and where they fit on the depth chart throughout the course of the season.
