The 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft is set for July 12, leaving NFL Teams a little more than a week to prepare. The draft will be done electronically, with teams submitting their selections(if any) to the NFL. Will the New York Jets make a selection?
If the New York Jets weren’t so happy with their group of wide receivers, Utah wide receiver Josh Gordon would probably be in their sights heading into the 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft. As it currently stands, the Jets were happy enough with what they saw from their wide receivers in minicamp to dismiss the possibility of signing Braylon Edwards. That suggests that the Jets won’t be willing to part with a third or fourth round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft for the rights to Josh Gordon, who currently holds a third-to-fourth round grade.
After waiving G.J. Kinne and releasing Ray Willis, there are some open spots on the Jets roster heading into training camp. Training camp kicks off July 26 at SUNY Cortland, two weeks after the 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft. Any players eligible for the supplemental draft that are not selected will enter the free agent pool and become fair game for any team interested.
At this point it seems as though the Jets will likely stay away from making any selections in the 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft. If Josh Gordon were to slip way beyond his value, into the sixth or seventh round, don’t be surprised if the Jets have submitted a late round bid to scoop him up at a discount. Otherwise, expect the Jets to hang on to their 2013 NFL Draft picks for now.
