Now that we are nearly finished with week 3 of the NFL preseason, it is time for us to do our final 2012 fantasy football rankings by position. This article is going to focus on the quarterback position as fantasy football owners everywhere are making final preparations for their fantasy league drafts.
The quarterback position is filled with intrigue this season as their are five quarterbacks that I consider to be truly elite; these are Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Cam Newton and Matthew Stafford. Yet, there are also a number of quarterbacks such as Michael Vick, Eli Manning, Matt Ryan, Tony Romo and Peyton Manning, who should be very good if not elite by season’s end.
Many fantasy football experts will tell you to wait on picking a quarterback and in some cases that is a solid draft strategy. However, it can be un-wise to ever lock yourself into that type of strategy because make no mistake, to win a fantasy football championship you are going to need at least a very good quarterback if not an elite one.
The FantasyPPR.com rankings have changed throughout the course of the offseason and now into the preseason and one of the biggest movers up our board has been Ryan, who will quarterback an explosive Falcons offense this season. Not only has Ryan proven to be a reliable commodity in the past but the Falcons now appear set on becoming a vertical passing team with wide receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White, meaning Ryan is going to be better than ever.
Thanks to his impressive preseason and the Falcons obvious commitment to stretching the field, Ryan has jumped from no.15 in the FantasyPPR.com QB Rankings all the way up the no.9 spot in this edition, which is our final pre-season ranking. Two other players that have made a big jump in our quarterback rankings are rookies Andrew Luck (no.24 to no.17) and Jake Locker (no.30 to no.23) due to their impressive preseason performances.
Overall, there is some outstanding value at the quarterback position when considering players such as Matt Schaub and Ben Roethlisberger can normally be had sometime after the eighth round. Jay Cutler is another quarterback that is being vastly under valued and in one draft I was able to nab him in the tenth round.
Thus, the strategy of waiting to draft a quarterback is a sound one if you have the discipline to wait until the middle rounds for a top-12 guy, yet don’t forget the purpose of drafting is getting playmakers on your roster, so if the opportunity to draft one of the big five quarterbacks presents itself, it will be worth pulling the trigger.
